Situated right to the northwest of Boston and directly to the east of Cambridge, Somerville is the most densely populated city in New England. In 2010 it was even listed as the 16th most densely populated city in the entire country. Somerville is an old town, going back to the year 1842. Somerville has a slightly different layout than other cities and towns. There is no downtown business district, instead there are spots or squares spread all over the city with businesses and entertainment. This is due to the early influence of streetcar and rail systems making it possible to take advantage of space in a different way. Somerville is also home to the annual Fluff Festival, which was founded in 2006 to celebrate the invention of Marshmallow Fluff by Archibald Query. Somerville has up to 83 different historical sites including libraries, various houses, churches, parkways, and other interesting landmarks. Despite being so densely populated, Somerville also houses several lovely parks such as the Alewife Linear Park, off of which branches the Minuteman Bikeway, the Fitchburg Cutoff Path, and the beautiful Somerville Community Path which is lined with trees on either side. According to a list made in 2010, Somerville has a total number of 63 playgrounds, parks, community gardens, and parks.
